Hakai is home to a range of coastal mammal, bird and fish species. These include orcas and humpback whales; bald eagles and kingfishers; and lingcod and rockcod. Hakai is located in the territory of the Heiltsuk people, who have lived in the region for millennia. Hakai is a Heiltsuk place name meaning “wide passage.”
