Miramichi Bay Closure
Approximate Area: 146842.09 hectares
Date of Designation: 1986
Conservation Objectives
To protect an important migration corridor for Atlantic salmon.
Prohibitions
Gillnetting is prohibited for all commercial fisheries in the closure.
Why (environmental context for protection)
This closure contains an important migration corridor for Atlantic salmon, who return each year to the Miramichi River to spawn in freshwater. Atlantic salmon populations in this part of the North Atlantic are currently of special concern, due in part to overfishing. Protecting Atlantic salmon helps to support growth of salmon numbers, as well as benefiting all other species which rely on salmon-related food webs, such as seals, waterfowl, and other fish like bass.
