Pingo Canadian Landmark
Conservation Objectives
The Pingo Canadian Landmark protects a unique arctic landform: ice-cored hills called pingos. Rising out of the flat tundra, pingos provide a distinctive backdrop to the community of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.
Prohibitions
Prohibitions include the recreational use of all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes or any other type of off-road vehicle (except snowmobiles), recreational use of snowmobiles from April 15 to October 31 each year, and use of snowmobiles or hiking on the actual pingo (from the base upwards to the summit) from April 15 to October 31.
The Pingo Canadian Landmark safeguards unique arctic landforms called pingos, which are ice-cored hills rising from the tundra. These pingos, along with the surrounding ecosystem and cultural heritage, are considered nationally significant and worthy of preservation for their scientific and cultural value.
