Bay of Islands Salmon Migration Closure

To protect Atlantic salmon migratory areas. 

All pelagic fixed-gear fisheries (for example, those which use methods like gillnetting) are prohibited in the closure.

This closure contains an important migration corridor for Atlantic salmon, as the fish move from sea to freshwater environments. Atlantic salmon populations in the North Atlantic are currently of concern, due in part to overfishing. Protecting Atlantic salmon habitats helps to support growth of salmon numbers, as well as benefiting all other species which rely on salmon-related food webs, such as seals, waterfowl, and other fish like tuna.
