To conserve the habitat of various marine species, such as American lobsters and Atlantic herring.

Prohibitions

Various forms of fishing, such as hydraulic dredging, trawling, and gillnetting are prohibited in the closure.

Why (environmental context for protection)

The lagoons around the Magdalen Islands act as spawning, breeding, and nursery areas for many aquatic species, including American lobsters and Atlantic herring. The closure contains eelgrass habitat, which is a highly productive ecosystem that can support a wide variety of species in key life stages. Other animals in the closure include Atlantic razor clams and American eels.
