Date of Designation: 2006
Conservation Objectives

To maintain productivity of harvested species and the biodiversity of individual species, communities, and populations within the different ecotypes, as well as to safeguard habitat, including the physical and chemical properties of the ecosystem, by maintaining water and sediment quality.

Prohibitions

Activities that disturb, damage or destroy areas of the estuary are prohibited. Also, removing living marine organisms or parts of their habitats unless given an exception are prohibited.

Why (environmental context for protection)

Musquash is unique because of its size and expansive salt marshes. Salt marshes are important as they contribute to nutrient cycling and serve as a buffer between water and land, which protects the land from floods and prevents erosion. In the Bay of Fundy, over 85 per cent of the original salt marshes have been altered by human activity over the past 300 years.
