Conservation Objectives
To protect the habitat of the beluga whale, which is a threatened species.
Prohibitions
Otter trawls are prohibited within the closure, as are any other human activities which threaten the beluga whale.
Why (environmental context for protection)
In addition to protecting the habitat of the beluga whale, the closure may be beneficial to numerous other species. Various species of brackish water or salt water fish, such as the Atlantic herring and capelin, may use the closure as a refuge. Also protected is the habitat of the threatened American eel.
